CISR Online Frequently Asked Questions

Am I eligible to take the CISR OnLine courses?
The Certified Insurance Service Representatives (CISR) designation is the nation’s leading insurance certification program for insurance customer service representatives and other insurance professionals. The course maintains rigorous national standards. Any employee of an agency, insurance company, or insurance-related business (including customer service representatives, insurance agents/producers, and agency managers) is eligible to take CISR OnLine.

Does the online format provide the same quality education provided by CISR classroom courses?
Yes, the quality of all the CISR courses is excellent, and numerous studies have proven that online learners perform as well as or better than their classroom-only counterparts. However, the CISR OnLine courses are not state-specific.

Can I “mix and match” CISR OnLine and CISR classroom courses?
Yes. Your online class will count toward your designation just as your classroom courses. Note: The classroom exam must be taken in class and the online exam must be taken online.

Will my computer run this course?
Take the free demo/tour. If your computer can run the demo/tour, you will be able to run the CISR OnLine course as well. See system requirements for a detailed list.

How much does a CISR Online course cost?
The registration fee is $149 per course.

What CISR OnLine courses are available?
All five CISR courses are available online:

  • Insuring Commercial Property
  • Insuring Personal Residential Property
  • Insuring Personal Auto Exposures
  • Insuring Commercial Casualty Exposures
  • Agency Operations

You may obtain your CISR designation online by completing and passing all five courses.

How does CISR OnLine work?:

Read the FAQs on the site before enrolling in the course.

  • A student enrolls for CISR OnLine through The National Alliance website to take the course.
  • Register (and arrange payment of $149 per course) online and receive your user ID and password.
  • The student has 30 days unlimited access to the course.
  • The student locates a proctor/monitor and arranges for this person to be present during the exam. [In some states, the proctor must register with the Department of Insurance.]
  • When the student finishes the course and is ready to take the exam, the student clicks on a link in the course to log in to the exam site, registers the proctor and completes the exam. The score and exam report are displayed immediately upon submitting the exam for grading.
  • The proctor signs an affidavit, verifying the student’s identity with a photo ID. [In some states, the proctor must register with the Department of Insurance.] Click on Proctor/Monitor to learn more.
  • The successful completion of an exam is required to earn a designation, CE credit, or update credit.
  • The student reports are sent electronically to The National Alliance. The student sends the affidavit of exam to The National Alliance for credit.

If I decide not to take the course, may I get a refund?
Cancellation requests received within five calendar days of registering for a National Alliance OnLine Education course are eligible to transfer to another course, substitute an eligible person for the same event, or receive a full refund. No refunds, transfers or substitutions are given for cancellation requests received after 5 calendar days of registering for a National Alliance OnLine Education course.

How long will it take to complete each CISR OnLine course?
On average, if you spend an hour a day, five days a week, you should be able to complete one course in two weeks. If you average one course every two weeks, you should be able to complete your designation in 10 weeks. Of course, your schedule will determine the length of time needed to complete the designation.

Can I print out the course materials for future use?
Yes. We do recommend that you print out the coverage forms and glossary. Though it is copyrighted and is many pages, if you like, you also may print out the entire course for your own use. If you are not able to print any part of the course, please contact us.

How do I get help if I have a question while taking the course?
You may request help with the curriculum by clicking on the "Email Course Mentor " button and submitting your question. We will respond within 24 hours. For technical support, email cisronline@scic.com. You will receive a same day response between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Central Time, Monday through Friday.

Are the CISR OnLine courses state-specific?
No. To accommodate all 50 states, CISR OnLine courses are written using ISO forms and endorsements. It is critically important that you identify which policy form is used when discussing coverage as well as your state-specifics and endorsements, to be certain that you are getting the entire picture of the policy language since these courses are not state-specific. One of the objectives of a CISR course is to teach you how to read a policy and to learn what different conditions and exclusions are. You will then be able to apply this information to the policies and state-specifics used in your offices.

Do I have to take the exam?
Yes, to maintain the integrity of the CISR Program, a proctored online exam is required. It is also necessary to achieve a passing score of at least 70 points to receive continuing education credit, CISR designation credit, or CISR update credit. However, if you do not want state continuing education, CISR update credit, or are not working towards earning your CISR designation program, you may take CISR OnLine courses for informational or educational purposes only.

Will I receive State Continuing Education (CE) credit?

  • State CE credit varies by state. Check the Continuing Education (CE Guide) to determine how many credits are granted in your state.
  • A passing score of at least 70 points is required to receive state continuing education credit.
  • Upon successful completion of the CISR OnLine course, your CE certificate will be issued by The National Alliance.

Do I receive State Continuing Education (CE) credit if I do not pass the exam?
No, The National Alliance and state regulators require that you achieve a passing score of at least 70 points to receive continuing education credit. This is important to maintain the integrity and high standards of the CISR Program.

If I am already a CISR, can I update my CISR designation through CISR OnLine? Do I have to take the exam?
Yes. Please note that a passing score of at least 70 points on the exam is required to receive update credit for your CISR designation.

When do I take the exam?
You have 30 days to complete the course and exam.

How do I take the exam?
The exam is administered online wherever you have Internet access. However, a proctor is required. Click on Proctor/Monitor to learn more.

Why do I need a proctor?
The proctor is required to ensure that no assistance is given to the student during the exam. The proctor will complete and sign an affidavit confirming that the student has complied with these requirements. To receive continuing education credit, CISR designation credit, or CISR update credit, the completed affidavit must be mailed to The National Alliance. To view or print your state’s affidavit, click here.

Who can be my proctor?

How do I register my proctor?
When you are ready to take the exam and your proctor is present, the exam links will prompt your proctor to register online. Please verify that your proctor meets the proctor requirements for your state by clicking on Proctor Instructions/Affidavits.

What score is needed to pass the exam?
You need to achieve a score of at least 70 points to pass the exam. You will receive your actual number score immediately after completing the exam. This report, including a review of the topics in which answers were missed, is automatically emailed to your email address and to CISR OnLine.

Is there a cost to retake the exam if I am not successful on the first try?
It will be necessary for you to re-register for the course. The course registration fee is $149. You will then receive a user ID and password and have full access to the course for another 30 days.

Are the exam questions all multiple-choice?
Yes, the exam is a 100-point test comprised of 50 multiple-choice questions worth two points each.
