In order to maximize coverage and protect your increasingly complex commercial property accounts, it is important to have a detailed understanding of Commercial Property coverages and endorsements, as well as the concepts used when correctly writing this business. Equally important is a familiarity with other coverages such as Time Element (Business Income), and Equipment Breakdown. At this institute you will learn to help provide your customers with the advice and protection they need.

Participants will:

  • Examine the property coverage found in the Building and Personal Property Coverage Form including the various Additional Coverages, Coverage Extensions, and Optional Coverages. Discuss valuation methods and the application of coinsurance. Learn the proper use of various endorsements.
  • Examine the common coverage, exclusions, and limitations of the three Causes of Loss Forms (Basic, Broad, and Special) with emphasis on the Special Causes of Loss Form. You will also explore the need for the Legal Liability Coverage Form.
  • Learn the property exclusions that determine when an Equipment Breakdown Policy is needed. Determine the types of equipment to include, and the role of engineering as it relates to these policies.
  • Determine the what, how, and why of Business Income Coverage and Extra Expense coverage. Learn the importance of complying with the coinsurance provision and which Optional Coverages are used to remove or suspend this provision. Examine several valuable Business Income endorsements.

John Kitson

Bio Detail

John Kitson is an independent insurance instructor and consultant. John has been a part of The National Alliance for Insurance Education and Research program for almost 20 years as a CISR and CIC instructor. He spent three years as the Director of Education for the Insurors of Tennessee. Prior to his position with the association, he was a Commercial Lines Underwriter/Manager for several insurance carriers. John began his career with Continental Insurance Company as a CBP underwriter. Following that, he spent a year with Crum & Forster as a Property/Package Underwriter. From there he went to work for AID Insurance (now part of Nationwide). Next in his travels was Home Insurance, (where he got to watch and see how the hard market really works). Finally, he joined St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance as a Commercial Underwriter. He also spent a year as a Surplus Lines Underwriter before being transferred to Nashville as the Commercial Underwriting Manager and Resident Manager. He has also worked directly with several insurance agencies in the area of education. Education has always been important to John. He passed the INS General Program in the first year of his insurance career. He attained the CPCU designation in 1983, the AU in 1992, the AIM in 1993, and his CIC designtion in 2004. He has also served on the board of directors of the Mid-Tennessee CPCU Chapter.

Paul Burkett

Bio Detail

Paul Burkett is the President and CEO of Snoaspen Insurance Group, Inc., which specializes in risk management consulting, insurance teaching, and expert witness services for insurance bad faith and agents' errors and omission cases. Paul began his career as a Loss Control Representative for SAFECO Insurance Company after serving as an Officer in the United States Air Force. During his career with SAFECO, Paul served as a Loss Control Supervisor, Loss Control Manager, Commercial Sales Representative, Division Commercial Lines Underwriting Manager, and Regional Workers Compensation Manager. From SAFECO, Paul worked for Frank B. Hall & Company as a Vice President in charge of Risk Management Services. Paul was responsible for design and implementation of alternative insurance programs such as pools, self-insurance programs, and captives. From Frank B. Hall, Paul assisted in establishing the Meadowbrook of Colorado office and focused on developing specialized group programs. Paul assisted in establishing TUITIONGard, LTD., which specialized in coverages for private student loans provided through banks in the United States. This agency operation was purchased by an insurance company and related field operations have phased out over the last few years. Paul has a Juris Doctorate from Concord School of Law, an undergraduate degree from the University of Minnesota and has completed graduate work at the University of Oklahoma in Public Administration. Paul has obtained the following designations: Certified Risk Manager (CRM), Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC), Associate in Risk Management (ARM), Associate in Loss Control Management (ALCM), and Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU). Paul is a National Faculty member of The National Alliance and has served on the Board of Governors of the Society of Certified Insurance Counselors.
