The Insurance Company Operations Institute describes how insurance companies function and why that is important to all insurance and risk management professionals. Learn about the important strategic decisions and tactics used in product development, underwriting, distribution, claims, and other vital company departments.

Participants will:

Understand the executive level strategies used to determine an insurance companies structure and the regulations and compliance requirements unique to the business. These executive level decisions will include the lines of business, geographic territory, personnel structure, delivery systems, and the use of reinsurance.

Gain knowledge on the role of product development and its importance to the livelihood of an insurance company. The information will range from developing a new product, making coverage adjustments, and anticipating coverage for emerging industries. The involvement of actuaries throughout product development will also be examined.

See why the role of underwriting is so important and how the underwriter is key to this process. Differences in company philosophies and guidelines will be analyzed. The functions described will include underwriting, loss control, and premium audit.

Take a close look at the importance of the relationship between the insurance company and those appointed to distribute their products and services. This will include examining how the company meets the needs of policyholders – from appointing insurance agencies to providing 24/7 customer service.

Explore the claims function from the steps in the claims process, how the claims department interacts with other departments, claim investigation, claim payment, and claim reserving practices.

Melvin Russell

Bio Detail

Mel Russell is CEO and President of Russell Insurance Consulting LLC, which specializes in property and casualty insurance consulting in the areas of executive leadership, underwriting, product development, marketing/sales, and reinsurance. He also serves on the Board of Directors of BuildFax Inc. in Austin, Texas. BuildFax provides property data to various industries such as insurance, private equity, and real estate. Mel holds a B.A. in English Literature from Gordon College in Wenham, Massachusetts. He resides in St. Petersburg, Florida. Mel holds the Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) designation, which he received in 2000. He is a strong advocate for continuing education in the insurance field, and currently serves as member and Past Chairperson of the National Board of Governors of CISR (Certified Insurance Service Representatives) in Austin, Texas. He has done curriculum development work for The National Alliance as well. He is also a charter member and Past Chairperson of the FAIA (Florida Association of Insurance Agents) National Alliance Education Committee in Tallahassee, Florida. Mel has over 40 years' experience in the property and casualty industry. He began his career in 1977 in Boston as a Commercial Lines Underwriter and then as Senior Underwriter with Fireman's Fund Insurance Company. He spent his first 12 years in the New England market, initially with Fireman's Fund and subsequently with General Accident Insurance Company, where he was a Senior Underwriter, Underwriting Supervisor, and Commercial Lines Underwriting Manager. He moved to the General Accident branch office in Orlando, Florida in 1989, where he ran the Personal Lines Underwriting, Commercial Lines Underwriting, Loss Control, and Premium Audit Departments. In 1999 Mel was a founding employee at United Property & Casualty Insurance Company (UPC Insurance), where he served as Chief Underwriting Officer, Corporate Secretary, head of Marketing, Senior Vice President, Executive Vice President, and President. He also served as Executive Vice President, Chief Underwriting Officer, and Director of Sales & Marketing at Heritage Insurance Company. Most of his time in the industry over the last 30 years has been spent in management and executive leadership; additionally, he gained valuable experience doing production underwriting of mid-market and large complex commercial accounts in both New England and Florida.

William Reedy

Bio Detail

Bill Reedy is President of Performance Partners, an insurance and professional skill training and consulting company headquartered in Seville, Ohio. Bill's special interests lie in Commercial Property/Casualty and Agency-Company relations. He is a graduate of the College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio; is a published author in the area of Business Income and has conducted agency training sessions since 1994. Bill is also an Associate CIC Faculty member and earned his CIC designation in 1993. Bill has instructed in several states over a wide range of insurance topics. Prior to this, Bill was a Personal and Commercial Lines Underwriter and Marketing Manager for Westfield Group, Westfield Center, OH. Bill also served as Manager of Commercial Lines Training Delivery, and was responsible to the Commercial Lines Graduate Development Program. Previously, Bill managed the TAPP program for new producer training at Westfield Insurance. He has also served on the Commercial Lines P&C Licensing Review committee for the Ohio Department of Insurance. More recently, Bill has served as an instructor with the Insurance Company Operations training team for the National Alliance. Bill is an advocate for continuous learning and The National Alliance programs. His company and industry experience along with his presentation ability combine to add value and enhance the knowledge, and performance of fellow insurance professionals.

Allen Messer

Bio Detail

Allen Messer began his insurance career in March of 1971. He has worked for several different insurance companies in various capacities and has been involved in the independent agency system as a producer and agency owner. Allen currently consults agencies, companies, risk managers, and attorneys as well as instructs various seminars and live webinars. He earned his CPCU designation in 1981 where he received the Distinguished Graduate Award for attaining the highest academic average in the Nation. He earned his CIC designation in 1977 and serves as an Educational Consultant and is a National Faculty member of The National Alliance for Insurance Education & Research.
