Commercial Casualty Institute


Most businesses have exposures that can be protected by the most common commercial casualty coverages offered in the insurance marketplace. This institute focuses on providing a thorough understanding of these primary coverage areas. You will understand how to design the best coverage for your client.

  • Business Automobile Coverages and Endorsements
  • Workers Compensation and Employers Liability

Participants will:

  • Learn what liability exposures exist in the areas of premises, operations, products and completed operations, and personal and advertising injury liability. Understand important legal concepts and how they correlate with CGL coverage. Determine what coverage the CGL provides, who is insured, what is excluded, how the limits apply and be able to identify appropriate CGL endorsements.
  • Explore the reasons for additional insured status and what problems may be created by adding an additional insured. The purpose, coverage and limitations of the more commonly used additional insured endorsements will be explained. Waivers of subrogation and the impact of the “Other Insurance” policy condition will also be addressed.
  • Identify the major coverages and exposures related to various uses of “covered autos” (owned, nonowned and hired). Determine “who is as an insured”, what exclusions apply, the gaps of coverage, and some endorsements that modify the Business Auto Coverage Form.
  • Understand important legal concepts and employment exposures of today’s workers compensation system. Workers Compensation and Employers Liability Insurance will be explained along with some of the more commonly used endorsements.

Steven Lyon

Bio Detail

Steven Lyon is the Founder and Principal of Lyon Consulting Services, LLC, an independent educational consulting firm. Steve utilizes his 37 years of experience that comes from owning, operating, and managing a third-generation independent insurance agency in Northern New Jersey. In addition to owning an agency, Steve has served as the Regional Director of Education for a large brokerage firm, and was Regional Vice President in charge of personal lines for the Insurance Division of a dynamic Banking Institution. Steve earned his CIC designation in 1980 and CRM in 2003. In addition, he holds the CPCU, ARM, AAI, AFIS, CRIS, AIS and MLIS designations. He is a National Faculty member for the National Alliance who regularly speaks at Ruble Graduate Seminars, CIC Institutes, Dynamic of Service classes, and CISR programs throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. In addition, Steve works closely with a wide variety of Professional Insurance Agent Associations, Independent Insurance Agent Associations, Large Brokers and Insurance Carriers.

Catherine Trischan

Bio Detail

Cathy Trischan has been with the E&K Insurance Group in Eatontown, New Jersey since 1996, and currently serves as Director of Commercial Underwriting. She began her insurance career upon graduation from Rutgers University in 1987. She has worked as a claims adjuster for a major property and casualty carrier as well as in the commercial departments of several large, New Jersey agencies. In addition to her work with E&K, Cathy provides education and consulting services to other agents and brokers. She is a National Faculty member of The National Alliance, speaking in both the CIC and CISR programs. She is a regular presenter for the Professional Insurance Agents (PIA) and other organizations and has taught both pre-licensing and continuing education courses. Cathy has written courses and articles on various insurance topics. A firm believer that one should never stop learning, Cathy holds several professional designations including CIC, CRM and CPCU. She earned her CIC designation in 1993 and her CRM designation in 2004.
