Commercial Casualty Institute


Most businesses have exposures that can be protected by the most common commercial casualty coverages offered in the insurance marketplace. This institute focuses on providing a thorough understanding of these primary coverage areas. You will understand how to design the best coverage for your client.

Participants will:

  • Learn what liability exposures exist in the areas of premises, operations, products and completed operations, and personal and advertising injury liability. Understand important legal concepts and how they correlate with CGL coverage. Determine what coverage the CGL provides, who is insured, what is excluded, how the limits apply and be able to identify appropriate CGL endorsements.
  • Explore the reasons for additional insured status and what problems may be created by adding an additional insured. The purpose, coverage and limitations of the more commonly used additional insured endorsements will be explained. Waivers of subrogation and the impact of the “Other Insurance” policy condition will also be addressed.
  • Identify the major coverages and exposures related to various uses of “covered autos” (owned, nonowned and hired). Determine “who is as an insured”, what exclusions apply, the gaps of coverage, and some endorsements that modify the Business Auto Coverage Form.
  • Understand important legal concepts and employment exposures of today’s workers compensation system. Workers Compensation and Employers Liability Insurance will be explained along with some of the more commonly used endorsements.

Jean Sundlof

Bio Detail

Jean Sundlof joined Kraus-Anderson Insurance in June of 1999. Jean's first position with Kraus was a combined Senior Account Executive and Marketer role. She moved into production in 2006 and is currently Director of the Captive Practice and an active producer. Prior to joining Kraus-Anderson, Jean worked at Youngdahl Companies for seven years. She had various responsibilities including sales, account executive work, and marketing. Jean has also served as an Agency Operations Representative for Great American Insurance Company and as Executive Director of Associated Risk Managers of Oklahoma. She began her career working with an independent insurance agency in Oklahoma in a sales and marketing capacity. Jean received her BBA and MBA in Management from the University of Oklahoma. She obtained her Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) designation in 1980 and her Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation in 1982. Jean instructs many courses for the Minnesota Independent Insurance Agents. She serves as a member of the National Faculty for the National Alliance, teaching both CIC and CISR. She is also an active faculty member for Swiss Re in instructing Agent's E&O courses. Jean completed the requirements to be designated as Associate in Captive Insurance (ACI) in 2007. She was the first Minnesotan to receive this designation. She recently added the CCI designation to her captive expertise. Jean was honored by the Oklahoma Association of Professional Insurance Agents in 1984 as Insurance Women of the year. She was also privileged to be named Young Agent of the Year in 1998 by the Minnesota Independent Insurance Agents.

Bettye Buffington

Bio Detail

Bettye Buffington is President of Central Insurance Services, Inc. in Beltsville, Maryland, and former Vice President of Truckwriters of Colorado, Inc. in Lakewood, Colorado. After long years of "commuting" across the country on a regular basis, Bettye is taking a break from her ownership and leadership roles in the agency business and will focus on teaching and consulting. Bettye has a long list of accomplishments and contributions to The National Alliance and to the state associations for which she instructs. Bettye has served on the Board of Governors for the Society of CISR, as well as the Board of Governors for the Society of CIC. She is a member of Insurance Agents & Brokers of Pennsylvania, Maryland and Delaware and has been a long-standing instructor for the association. Bettye is a National Faculty member for the Society of CIC, teaching at CISR courses, William T. Hold Seminars, CIC institutes, Ruble Seminars, and CRM courses. She is an instructor for other risk management and insurance associations and companies. She has written several articles and develops educational material on Insurance and Risk Management. Rough Notes magazine has featured Bettye in their marketing agency of the month and awarded her the "Marketing Agency of the Year." Accomplishments and contributions like these have earned her a place as a Charter Member of the "Distinguished Faculty" of The National Alliance for Insurance Education & Research.
