Participants will:

Understand the executive level strategies used to determine an insurance companies structure and the regulations and compliance requirements unique to the business. These executive level decisions will include the lines of business, geographic territory, personnel structure, delivery systems, and the use of reinsurance.

Gain knowledge on the role of product development and its importance to the livelihood of an insurance company. The information will range from developing a new product, making coverage adjustments, and anticipating coverage for emerging industries. The involvement of actuaries throughout product development will also be examined.

See why the role of underwriting is so important and how the underwriter is key to this process. Differences in company philosophies and guidelines will be analyzed. The functions described will include underwriting, loss control, and premium audit.

Take a close look at the importance of the relationship between the insurance company and those appointed to distribute their products and services. This will include examining how the company meets the needs of policyholders – from appointing insurance agencies to providing 24/7 customer service.

Explore the claims function from the steps in the claims process, how the claims department interacts with other departments, claim investigation, claim payment, and claim reserving practices.

John Masselli

Bio Detail

John Masselli is currently President & CEO of Enterprise Advisory Partners, LLC in Mt. Pleasant, SC. He attended the University of Rochester and completed distance learning studies in management with Kennedy-Western University. John's insurance career began in 1979 as an agent for Prudential and as a Sales Manager instructing the new agents' training program until 1984 when he became an independent agent. He left insurance briefly to join family in the restaurant business, but in 1990 he returned to insurance, becoming an underwriter for Commercial Mutual Insurance Company. He later became Vice President of Underwriting and then Vice President of Underwriting and Claims with Commercial Mutual Insurance Company. John then joined Colonial Cooperative Insurance Company as Vice President of Insurance Operations, with direct oversight of Claims and Underwriting. He has also served as a management consultant to York Claims Services and he worked with New York Mutual Underwriters as Assistant Manager and as General Manager & CEO, retiring from that position in April, 2018. John received his CIC designation in 2001, his CPCU designation in 2009 and his AAI, AIS and AU professional designations in 2009 and 2010. He served on the Forms Writing Committee of the Underwriters Rating Board RSO and was a member of its Board of Governors. He has been an instructor for The National Alliance since May 2017, teaching in both the "CML Institute" and the "ICO Institute". He was Greene County's STOP-DWI Coordinator and was an instructor for the "Point & Insurance Reduction" course in NY State. He regularly speaks at various civic and professional organizations and is a member and Past President of the Northeastern New York Chapter, CPCU Society.

Douglas Goldberg

Bio Detail

Doug Goldberg has worked in insurance company operations, encompassing personal and commercial lines since 1986. His career spans a wide range of roles. Most recently, Doug has been a company executive responsible for strategic partnerships, business development, program management, and field marketing, while overseeing national and state-level clients with California Casualty's affinity-focused auto and home insurance programs. Prior to that role, Doug managed commercial group programs, including a national health insurance trust and state workers' compensation plans. Doug began his career with a variety of jobs: personal lines CSR and sales representative, commercial producer and workers' compensation claims adjuster. In 2009, Doug added responsibility for managing California Casualty's agency partnerships, selling additional personal lines through several industry carriers. Doug's vast range of industry experience has led him to a new role as a Mentor to Insurtech startups at Plug and Play Tech Center, advising entrepreneurs on company operations and market development. Doug earned his CIC designation in 1999. He is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, with a degree in political science.

Kirk Johnson

Bio Detail

Prior to joining The National Alliance, Kirk was a home office staff underwriter for a national insurance carrier. Overall, he has over 33 years of experience with three national insurance companies, as well as two regional carriers. Kirk has enjoyed a wide variety of experiences in commercial underwriting, product development, state filing and compliance, reinsurance, technical writing and training. After honorably serving the U.S. Navy, Kirk began his insurance career in the mailroom. Attributing his success to a lifetime of learning, he earned the Associate in General Insurance in 1991. In 2002, he received the Certified Insurance Counselor designation and in 2016, he received the Certified Risk Manager designation.

Jay Williams*

Bio Detail

Jay Williams is a National Faculty Member and an Educational Consultant for The National Alliance for Insurance Education and Research. He earned his CIC designation in 1996 and his CRM designation in 2004. He is a veteran of the insurance industry, starting his career in 1979. His experience includes 21 years in the agency business, nine years at the Florida Association of Insurance Agents, and seven years as an insurance company and PEO executive. Jay also served as the interim CEO for Applied Client Network, the user-group association for agents using Applied Systems platforms. Jay has been teaching formal insurance classes for over 20 years, including both technical insurance and E&O loss control classes for FAIA. He was part of the IIABA Loss Control Working Group for 5 years and also served on the Professional Liability Committee. His experience on the agency, association, and company sides gives Jay a uniquely rounded perspective on the insurance industry. His most recent position was the CEO of a construction risk wholesale operation. In addition to his work as an insurance educator, Jay serves as an expert witness, a consultant to insurance companies, associations, agencies, and industry-related partners, and an E&O auditor.

April Nicole Sherrill Wyatt

Bio Detail

Nikki Wyatt is a Claims Team Leader with Pennsylvania National Mutual Casualty Insurance Company. Penn National Insurance is a regional P&C Insurance Carrier on the Eastern portion of the United States. Nikki started her claims carrier with Penn National in 1995 where she has remained throughout her insurance carrier. Nikki oversees the automobile line of business in claims for the states of North Carolina, Virginia, South Carolina, Tennessee and Alabama. She has 11 adjusters that report directly to her. She also trains Claim Representative Trainees for Penn National Insurance. She enjoys teaching college graduates about insurance and claims handling in this program. She developed the curriculum for this program, whereas candidates have been successfully trained, hired and promoted throughout the company. Nikki also works as a Claims Alliance for the independent agents in her territory. She is charged with making sure the customer experience during the claims process is simple, timely and professional on all levels. Her focus is on customer service at all times. Therefore, the agencies she works with are able to have a claims contact to help them and their insureds through any claims issues or concerns. She is proud to have had a long carrier in claims and have the ability to teach others to love claims as well. Nikki earned a degree in Economics. She has obtained many designations throughout her career, but is most proud of her CIC designation obtained in 2018.
