Paul Martin is an Academic Director of The National Alliance for Insurance Education and Research located in Austin, Texas where he works to develop, maintain, and deliver quality educational programs for the organization. Prior to joining the National Alliance, Paul worked across the insurance industry in a wide variety of roles.
He served as the director of education for two organizations, as vice president of sales for an insurance tech company, as a partner in a Mississippi independent agency, as a commercial underwriter for a large P&C company, and as a multi-lines adjuster in Texas
He is a graduate of Texas A&M University Mays School of Business, and completed his Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter designation in 1994. He has devoted his entire career to the research and development of practical educational solutions for independent insurance agents and other licensed professionals.
Faculty NameRobert Ray*
Bob Ray, a second generation insurance professional, has been employed in the insurance industry since 1973. A graduate of Jacksonville University, he has also completed insurance-related courses at Crawford & Company, Lumberman's Underwriting Alliance, and the National Institute of Occupational Safety & Health. Bob's career has spanned all aspects of the insurance industry. He began his career as a claims adjuster and property appraiser for Crawford & Company. In 1974, Universal Underwriters hired Bob to develop the Accident Prevention & OSHA Inspection Program for the Florida Automobile Dealers Association Self-Insurance Fund. While there, he served as Divisional Underwriting Manager for the Western Division and Divisional Executive Assistant for the Western & Southern Divisions. During this time, he co-authored "Unicover IV & V," a package policy developed exclusively for franchised automobile dealers.
In 1987, Bob assisted in the creation of a new professional liability insurance carrier, RUMGER Insurance Company, later purchased by Great American Insurance Company. He authored their easy-to-read professional liability insurance policies - Pro-Law & Pro-Med for lawyers and physicians respectively.
In June 1993, Bob joined National Risk Management & Associates. In addition to providing insurance products and services, Bob frequently testifies as an insurance expert in many states as well as federal courts. His clients have included the Orlando International Airport, Walt Disney's Epcot Center, Commercial Carrier Corp, Nichols Campbell & Morrow (NCM), and several insurance carriers and law firms. He has developed and drafted policy language and state filings for specialized markets including New & Used Car Dealers Package, eBusinessowners & eProfessional Liability, and Insurance Agents, Lawyers and Physicians Professional Liability policies.

David Hershey is the Corporate Risk Manager for Sprague Operating Resources, LLC and Lexa International. Collectively, a $5+ Billion (USA) and $5+Billion European global diverse organization consisting of petroleum wholesale and distribution, wastewater treatment equipment manufacturing, lumber recycling, medical product manufacturing, residential water purification and softening equipment manufacturing, college student housing, telecommunications, petrochemical, food, lifting equipment, pump manufacturing, bearing & transmission manufacturing, auto parts distribution and the exclusive European distributor of Fuji film.
Prior experience includes the role of Risk Manager for Sotheby Holdings, NYC one of the world's premier auction houses and Day & Zimmermann, a large international military contractor providing base and supply support services.
David is current President of the Massachusetts RIMS Chapter, Board Member of the NH CPCU, a published author of several pollution coverage and insurance related articles such as Finite Risk, The Risk Management of Brownfields, Pollution Liability Coverage Loopholes, Maritime Employers Liability, Indemnitees, Additional Insured and the Insurance Certificate.
Other accomplishments include being a finalist as the manager of the Workers' Compensation Best Managed Workers' compensation Program sponsored by National Underwriter and recipient of the 2014 Risk Management All Star and the Risk Manager Responsibility award by Risk & Insurance and Liberty Mutual.
Other notable accomplishments include instructor of insurance related courses and the Insurance Library of Boston and the Philadelphia Insurance Library, expert witness, past Board Member of RIMS External Affairs Committee, current member RIMS Standards & Practices Committee, 2009 winner of Zurich Award for largest decrease in WC claims, co-author of RIMS Claims Handling Guidebook for Risk Managers, current member of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, and proficiency in nuclear liability, munitions manufacturing and international coverage placement and coordination, large casualty, program agreement negotiation, risk financing and pollution coverage.

Jeff Odom is an Insurance Analyst and Instructor for the Florida Association of Insurance Agents (FAIA). Jeff's duties at FAIA include writing, updating, and revising FAIA's Florida Insurance Research Library. Jeff also writes and edits the Florida General Lines Study Manual. Along with writing, Jeff teaches both live and webinar classes. Topics include customer service, ethics, personal lines, insurance law, and licensing law.
Jeff graduated from Florida State University in 1988 and began his insurance career with an independent insurance agency. He has been married for over 25 years and has two children.

Joe Gates graduated from the University of Georgia with a BA in Political Science. Upon graduation he learned he had no interest in a career in Politics or Science, so he did what any sensible college graduate who needs a job does, he joined the exciting world of insurance. Joe has been in the insurance industry for 21 years with experience on both the retail and carrier sides of the business. Joe is currently the Southeast Region Territory Manager for the Beazley Group where he spends his days discussing coverage for Privacy and Security, Tech E&O and MPL.

Jeff Driver is the chief consultant and principal of Soteria Risk Works, LLC.
Spanning over twenty-five years of professional practice in his prior roles as chief risk officer at Stanford Medicine, Harvard's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and Children's Hospital San Diego, Jeff had overall strategic and tactical accountability for enterprise risk management, including the formation and executive responsibility for their captive insurers. In his role as CEO of The Risk Authority Stanford, Jeff led the formation and focus of a team whose philosophy was that every problem has a solution just waiting to be designed. Together they co-created revolutionary approaches to risk management, including the use of artificial intelligence in risk identification, incorporating decision analytics in claim reserve and trial strategy, and a global partnership in clinical risk management innovation throughout hospitals in the United Kingdom and the United States.
In 2018, Jeff partnered with alums of the world-leading design firm "IDEO" to author Discovery Design - an industry-first textbook for healthcare professionals in how to use Design Thinking to drive healthcare innovation and sustainable improvement.
As a pragmatic academic, Jeff is a lifelong student dedicated to continually interrupting the status-quo in a constant vision to increase the effectiveness of risk management and patient safety. Jeff holds a BS in respiratory technology and practiced clinically as an intensive care patient life support specialist before becoming a risk manager and receiving his MBA in healthcare administration. Early in his risk management career, Jeff earned a Juris Doctor and is a member of the California Bar. Recently, Jeff completed his dissertation at the University of Oxford leading to the award of MSc. in Evidence-Based Healthcare which will be conferred in early 2019. Jeff is a faculty associate for Arizona State University College of Nursing and Health Innovation and a Doctor of Management candidate at Case Western Reserve University.
Faculty NameRichard Clarke*
Dick Clarke is a veteran of the property/liability insurance industry, having worked as underwriter, broker and consultant through hard and soft market cycles. He was formerly Senior Vice President with the regional brokerage, J. Smith Lanier & Co. headquartered in Georgia, having retired late in 2016.
He publishes articles and teaches on a variety of executive liability, cyber and E&O subjects, and functions as an expert witness, a consultant to buyers of commercial insurance, and to insurance companies concerning product development. He is a teacher in CE programs for several professional insurance organizations. His books are listed for purchase on Amazon.com, with the most recent, Executive Liability Insurance: Evolving Times, Evolving Exposures and Evolving Insurance appearing as a revised, sixth edition available early 2020.) Additionally, this book was translated into Japanese for the Risk Management community in Japan, in 2013. Dick provided content and editing for The National Alliance's on-line course on Directors and Officers Liability insurance (2015 to present) and was an original recipient of the CPCU Society's "Distinguished Instructor in Insurance" award, in 1996.

Faculty NameChris Christian
Chris Christian began her insurance career in 1985, joining GAF Insurance Services, a retail agency. After six years with GAF, Chris moved to the carrier side, opening the San Diego branch office of RLI Corporation, an underwriter of specialty lines insurance. The San Diego office was dedicated to directors and officers liability coverage and was the launching pad for Chris's specialization in professional liability.
By 1997, when Chris departed RLI to join London American General Agency, she had established herself as an underwriter of hard-to-place nonprofit directors and officers liability accounts, healthcare directors and officers liability, and managed care errors and omissions coverages. At London American, Chris launched two underwriting facilities for healthcare-related errors and omissions and directors and officers coverages, as well as brokerage facilities for professional liability and property/casualty lines.
Chris joined US Risk Brokers in November 2005 as Vice President and Senior Broker, specializing in professional liability. She has earned her Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) and Registered Professional Liability Underwriter (RPLU) designations and is a frequent industry speaker and author. She is also active in industry associations.

Rodney is Southeast Region Director for Lloyd's. Lloyd's is headquartered in London and opened the Southeastern office for Lloyd's in Atlanta in late 2010. He is a graduate of the University of Georgia with a Risk Management and Insurance degree and received his CIC designation in 2006 and CRM designation in 2013.
Rodney has over 31 years of Insurance industry experience. He is a prominent national speaker, frequently asked to address industry conventions and Universities. Rodney serves as an instructor at the WSIA courses and is a certified instructor approved to provide CE credits in multiple states.
Rodney serves on educational boards and industry committees including the National Insurance Industry Council, Georgia State University School of Risk Management Board, Troy State University School of Risk Management, University of Georgia RMI Board, International Society of Catastrophe Managers, WSIA Education Committee, and the Georgia Surplus Lines Association Executive Committee.

Faculty NameCharles Matejowsky*
Charlie Matejowsky, CIC, LUTCF is vice president of financial services for Van Dyke, Rankin & Co. Inc., in Brenham, Texas. He joined the firm in June 1982, as a personal and commercial lines producer. Since March 1990, he has served in his current position and works almost exclusively on the life and financial services side of the business. As a "Retirement Repairman" he serves both individual and group clients.
Prior to joining Van Dyke, Rankin & Co., he served 15 years as a classroom teacher and coach in several Texas Cities. Matejowsky is a 33-year member of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors and is a charter member of the American Health Insurance Association. He has served in numerous leadership roles at both local NAIFA-Central Texas and NAIFA-Texas. In 2016, he was awarded the Bruce Murry Tall Texas Award based on his association involvement, community service and education.
He earned his CIC designation in 1986 and has been a National Faculty member for the National Alliance for Insurance Education and Research for 20 years and instructs both basic and advanced classes all over the United States. He also served as a moderator for the American College of Financial Services' Life Underwriter Training Council for 20 years.
Charlie prides himself in being an A B C (Aggie-Bohemian-Coach) kind of guy. His goal is to educate clients and prospects and help them make those very important lifetime and retirement decisions.
Faculty NameMichael Smith
Michael Smith is the co-founder and former President of Global Marine Insurance Agency, one of the largest marine only specialty agencies in the US who represent every major marine insurer. Mike's 38 year career focus has been as an agent and executive specialized in personal and commercial marine risks. Mike is a certified (CE) marine insurance instructor for Commercial Marine Insurance Professional (CMIP), Michigan Association of Insurance Agents (MAIA) and the National Marine Lenders Association (NMLA).
Mike's career and boating background uniquely qualify him to instruct on the subject of yacht insurance. Mike began boating as a young boy and has owned or operated various boats of all sizes, both power and sail and has cruised extensively in the Great Lakes and the Caribbean. Mike served on the board of directors of the National Marine Lenders Association and is the past president of the local community sailing program; Traverse Area Community Sailing (TACS) and is a member of the Grand Traverse Yacht Club. Mikes passion for boats and his love of the water are revealed in each of his seminars along with his numerous "war stories" relating to yachting and insurance.

Dr. Victor Puleo is the Davey Chair of Risk Management and Insurance in the Lacy School of Business at Butler University, Indianapolis, IN. He earned a doctorate degree in risk management and insurance at Florida State University. Dr. Puleo has articles published in the Journal of Insurance Issues, Risk Management and Insurance Review, Managerial Finance, and Best's Review.

Dr. Puleo is a Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) and Certified Financial Planner ™ Certificant. He is an Educational Consultant (1994) and National Faculty Member (2008) for the Society of Certified Insurance Counselors. Dr. Puleo is a member of the Board of Directors and Chair of The National Alliance Research Academy.
Prior to being named the Davey Chair of Risk Management and Insurance, Dr. Puleo was an Associate Professor of Insurance and Risk Management at the University of Central Arkansas (UCA), Conway, AR. The insurance and risk management undergraduate degree program at UCA is nationally ranked. Students from UCA were the first in the country to be conferred the University Associate Certified Insurance Counselor (UACIC) designation. The UACIC designation was created to give college students pursuing an insurance and risk management undergraduate degree the opportunity to attain a new level of professionalism through advanced practical education while in college. This designation is a program of the National Alliance Research Academy.

Allen Messer began his insurance career in March of 1971. He has worked for several different insurance companies in various capacities and has been involved in the independent agency system as a producer and agency owner.
Allen currently consults agencies, companies, risk managers, and attorneys as well as instructs various seminars and live webinars. He earned his CPCU designation in 1981 where he received the Distinguished Graduate Award for attaining the highest academic average in the Nation. He earned his CIC designation in 1977 and serves as an Educational Consultant and is a National Faculty member of The National Alliance for Insurance Education & Research.
