Faculty NamePatrick Deem
Patrick Deem began his insurance industry career in December 1969 with USF&G Insurance Company in the Louisville, Kentucky Branch Office. He has been an Underwriting Manager, Sales Manager, Excess and Surplus Lines Underwriter, and an Independent Insurance Agent. Patrick publishes articles and conducts seminars on a state and national basis regarding technical subjects of property and casualty insurance for insurance and trade associations. In addition, Patrick has served as an insurance consultant and testified as an expert witness in various fields associated with the insurance industry.
Currently, Patrick is a licensed Risk Manager in Texas. He founded Risk Management and Insurance Education Services in Austin, Texas, an independent company which serves insurance companies, agents, and insureds.
Patrick holds the Certified Insurance Counselor designation, which he obtained in 1984. He has been a National Faculty member for The National Alliance for Insurance Education & Research since 1986.
Faculty NameBettye Buffington
Bettye Buffington is President of Central Insurance Services, Inc. in Beltsville, Maryland, and former Vice President of Truckwriters of Colorado, Inc. in Lakewood, Colorado. After long years of "commuting" across the country on a regular basis, Bettye is taking a break from her ownership and leadership roles in the agency business and will focus on teaching and consulting. Bettye has a long list of accomplishments and contributions to The National Alliance and to the state associations for which she instructs. Bettye has served on the Board of Governors for the Society of CISR, as well as the Board of Governors for the Society of CIC. She is a member of Insurance Agents & Brokers of Pennsylvania, Maryland and Delaware and has been a long-standing instructor for the association.
Bettye is a National Faculty member for the Society of CIC, teaching at CISR courses, William T. Hold Seminars, CIC institutes, Ruble Seminars, and CRM courses. She is an instructor for other risk management and insurance associations and companies. She has written several articles and develops educational material on Insurance and Risk Management. Rough Notes magazine has featured Bettye in their marketing agency of the month and awarded her the "Marketing Agency of the Year." Accomplishments and contributions like these have earned her a place as a Charter Member of the "Distinguished Faculty" of The National Alliance for Insurance Education & Research.
Faculty NameRichard Pitts
Richard S. Pitts is Vice President and General Counsel to Arlington/Roe & Co., Inc., an insurance brokerage and managing general agent headquartered in Indianapolis. Rick also serves as general counsel to the Independent Insurance Agents of Indiana, Inc. As counsel to the "Big I," Rick speaks annually at the association's Agency Compliance Seminars and teaches various seminars on insurance and employment related matters. Rick has also presented continuing education seminars to insurance professionals nationally.
Rick is a 1983 graduate of Wabash College and a 1986 graduate of the Indiana University McKinney School of Law. He clerked for the Honorable Patrick D. Sullivan, a judge of the Indiana Court of Appeals in 1986-87. Rick is admitted to practice before Indiana state and federal courts, the United States Supreme Court and the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit and is a member of local, state, and national bar associations. He has tried cases and participated in over seventy appeals.
Rick has served as a panelist and lecturer on a variety continuing education subjects, including cyber-related risks, the Americans with Disabilities Act, "Mold: Issues Under the Microscope" for the Indiana Continuing Legal Education Forum (ICLEF), and "Insurance Issues for Builders" for the Indiana Builders Association. Rick has also served as chair of several ICLEF seminars, including "Advanced Corporate Practice," "Privacy Law," and "Insurance Coverage Issues." Rick has also presented seminars on "Insuring Fiduciary Exposures," "Insurance Coverage Disputes," and "Agency Succession and Perpetuation." He has co-authored articles appearing in the Indiana Law Review.
