The Insurance Company Operations Institute describes how insurance companies function and why that is important to all insurance and risk management professionals. Learn about the important strategic decisions and tactics used in product development, underwriting, distribution, claims, and other vital company departments.

Participants will:

Understand the executive level strategies used to determine an insurance companies structure and the regulations and compliance requirements unique to the business. These executive level decisions will include the lines of business, geographic territory, personnel structure, delivery systems, and the use of reinsurance.

Gain knowledge on the role of product development and its importance to the livelihood of an insurance company. The information will range from developing a new product, making coverage adjustments, and anticipating coverage for emerging industries. The involvement of actuaries throughout product development will also be examined.

See why the role of underwriting is so important and how the underwriter is key to this process. Differences in company philosophies and guidelines will be analyzed. The functions described will include underwriting, loss control, and premium audit.

Take a close look at the importance of the relationship between the insurance company and those appointed to distribute their products and services. This will include examining how the company meets the needs of policyholders – from appointing insurance agencies to providing 24/7 customer service.

Explore the claims function from the steps in the claims process, how the claims department interacts with other departments, claim investigation, claim payment, and claim reserving practices.

Michael DeHetre

Bio Detail

Mike DeHetre is Vice President of Underwriting for Berkley Small Business Services in Wilmington, DE. Mike began his career in the insurance industry in 1993 after receiving his Bachelor's degree in Business from the University of Maryland. He subsequently earned his M.B.A. from the University of Connecticut. Mike received his CIC designation in 2002 and his CRM designation in 2008. Mike traces the path of his career across the United States including Maryland, Colorado, New Mexico, Minnesota, Arizona, Texas, North Carolina, and Connecticut with companies including USF&G, The Hartford and Acadia. He has had the opportunity to watch the growth and development of the small commercial segment in particular from the use rating manuals, to rating disks and dial-up mainframe access, to the proliferation of mobile technologies today. Mike's passion for education has led him to many teaching opportunities throughout his career. He's excited to continue to bring his enthusiasm and commitment to the industry to many more groups in the future.

Bio Detail

Bill Reedy is President of Performance Partners, an insurance and professional skill training and consulting company headquartered in Seville, Ohio. Bill's special interests lie in Commercial Property/Casualty and Agency-Company relations. He is a graduate of the College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio; is a published author in the area of Business Income and has conducted agency training sessions since 1994. Bill is also an Associate CIC Faculty member and earned his CIC designation in 1993. Bill has instructed in several states over a wide range of insurance topics. Prior to this, Bill was a Personal and Commercial Lines Underwriter and Marketing Manager for Westfield Group, Westfield Center, OH. Bill also served as Manager of Commercial Lines Training Delivery, and was responsible to the Commercial Lines Graduate Development Program. Previously, Bill managed the TAPP program for new producer training at Westfield Insurance. He has also served on the Commercial Lines P&C Licensing Review committee for the Ohio Department of Insurance. More recently, Bill has served as an instructor with the Insurance Company Operations training team for the National Alliance. Bill is an advocate for continuous learning and The National Alliance programs. His company and industry experience along with his presentation ability combine to add value and enhance the knowledge, and performance of fellow insurance professionals.
