Mental Health Parity Act of 1996 (“MHPA”), as amended by the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008 (“MHPAE”)

A federal regulation that requires employers to provide coverage for the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness and substance abuse under the same terms and conditions applied to other medical conditions, including equal lifetime and annual maximum benefits for medical and mental health benefits. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (“PPACA”) eliminated lifetime maximum benefits in 2010 and will eliminate annual maximum benefits in 2014.
